Celestron Regal M2 Spotting Scope Review in 2022 (ALL Sizes)

celestron regal m2 spotting scope

This is a comprehensive Celestron Regal M2 spotting scope review.

I found this spotting scope very useful for hunting, wildlife viewing, and birding because it brings your subject into sharp focus instantly.

These scopes have a high-quality coating that is used on observatory-class telescopes to allow maximum light transmission. It helps you to get the brightest image possible in low-light conditions.

As a stargazer and night explorer, you can see high-quality images due to premium quality lens and ED glass.

In this review, I’ll discuss key features, specs, and available sizes in this model.

Celestron Regal M2 Overview

This spotting scope is an excellent choice for anyone looking to spot distant objects with crystal clarity. Hunters and long-range shooters can use it to find the targets from a distance without alerting them.

Birders and wildlife observers will find it pretty handy to explore nature using instant focus. Night explorers will find clear and sharp night views due to XLT optical coatings. These are the same premium coatings companies used on observatory-class telescopes.

You can use it for Digiscoping by connecting your camera using its T-mount for taking high-resolution images.

The Celestron Regal M2 spotting scope is made in Taiwan, but I hardly found a reason that goes against this scope’s performance.

Although the Celestron spotting scope comes with a high price tag, the use of high-quality materials like ED lens and XLT coatings give you full value for money.

There are only three sizes available in this model. You won’t find any straight scopes in this model as Celestron has provided in its Ultima line. Therefore, the Celestron spotting scopes are designed for more serious applications with scoping details in mind.

The most popular size is the Celestron Regal M2 80ED because of its versatility, as you can use it for various purposes in the outdoors, from locating your game to seeing the stars.

The following two sections will highlight some common features in all three sizes. The later sections will highlight individual features of each size.

Optical performance

I have never seen a crystal-clear image with high resolution and contrast as I did with the Celestron Regal scope. I hadn’t seen any chromatic aberration even when I used it during the day in desert conditions.

Glass and coatings

The Celestron Regal M2 spotting scope comes with a quality objective lens made of extra-low dispersion glass. It means you won’t have to deal with any chromatic aberrations (Chromatic aberrations are the color dispersion of the image) as its lens can focus on the colors on the same focal point.

With the high-quality XLT coating on the glass, the scope can reproduce precise colors with improved contrast and better resolutions.

The Celestron scope also comes with a BaK4 roof prism system that ensures better light transmission and further clarifies the image after processing it with the available amount of light.

These coatings and roof prisms improve the overall light transmission over the optical path to produce bright images in low light conditions.

Image quality and clarity

This scope comes with an ED glass lens that does a great job of reproducing colors and keeping them close to reality. You won’t have to deal with any chromatic aberration issues, and all the colors will be on the same focal point for better sharpness.

The XLT coatings ensure even better clarity and sharpness of the images in distant views. This scope also features a BaK4 roof prism system that gathers more light from the surroundings and further clarifies the image.

This scope can produce exceptional images in low-light conditions. This is a suitable scope for a night exploring whether on the ground or in the sky.

Construction and quality

The body is armored with magnesium alloy to make the Celestron Regal spotting scope fog proof and waterproof. It means you can use it in any weather condition.

You can find different eyepieces with varying magnifications to work with this scope. This scope is compatible with all screw-on eyepieces. It does come with a 16-48x zoom eyepiece with varying magnification and a wider field of view. It means you can change the eyepiece according to your requirements on the field and how much detail you want in your images.

This feature is especially very helpful in Digiscoping, where you have to take images of different objects at different distances with various details.

Moreover, this scope is compatible with those traditional 1.25-inch astronomical eyepieces, and you can use them for looking at the stars and planets.

The Regal M2 scope by Celestron doesn’t come with straight eyepieces as in the case of Celestron Ultima. So, you will only get 45-degree angled eyepieces. It means that you can work with shorter tripods and can only use these Celestron Regal spotting scopes for longer distance viewing (not even at shorter angles at a lower terrain).

Body and design

This spotting scope comes with a magnesium alloy body. This material is pretty durable and strong, but it is lighter than the conventional aluminum alloy used for the construction of these spotting scopes.

The Regal scope also comes with an integrated tripod mount that allows you to place it on a tripod stand or a window mount to comfortably enjoy the views without any distortions caused by an unstable base.

This scope also comes with a T-mount and is completely camera adaptable for digiscoping. Moreover, Celestron has nitrogen purged, and o-ring sealed it for fog and waterproofing. Therefore, you can comfortably use it outdoors no matter what the terrain or weather conditions are.

This spotting scope comes with a dual focus mechanism and upgrades from the previous model. This focus is not only two times faster, which means you can quickly zero in even on a moving target.

But the scope can also provide you with a coarse focus for any rough adjustment or fine focus for a more detailed adjustment which truly becomes handy when you’re taking images (digiscoping).

The Regal spotting scope’s focus system works pretty smoothly, and you won’t have to deal with any choppy images during the transition. The focus wheel will be there right next to the eyepiece so accessing it is not a problem.

And the wheel has a petty ergonomic design, and you can conveniently use it with your gloves on and in rainy conditions.

Celestron Regal M2 model sizes

There are three sizes available in the Celestron Regal M2 spotting scope, and the most popular one is the Regal M2 65ED scope because of its versatility and budget-friendliness as compared to other sizes.

The following table provides you with a detailed overview of all the sizes available in the Celestron M2 spotting scope.

Celestron Regal M2 65ED

The Celestron Regal M2 65ED spotting scope is the lightest of all three sizes, but it still weighs over 47 ounces. Therefore, it is better to use a tripod or a window mount with it. The Regal M2 65ED is suitable for use on the move up to some extent, but you can only do that inside a vehicle.

However, with a greater eyepiece, you can do long-distance shooting and stargazing if you want. But the results are not going to be that sharp if you compare them with what the 100ED Regal M2 can produce.

The Celestron Regal M2 65ED comes with the widest field of view out of the three and has wicked magnification. Therefore, hunters, birders, and wildlife observers will find it pretty useful. It does come with pretty long eye relief, so you can use it with your spectacles on.

Celestron Regal M2 80ED

The Celestron Regal M2 80ED spotting scope is a suitable option for spotting rifle targets up to 300 yards. Serious wildlife observers and birders can also use it, especially if they want more details for digiscoping. You can easily see individual leaves on the trees from a distance of 400 yards at 60x with absolute clarity.

The Celestron Regal M2 80ED also features extra-low dispersion glass, so it is going to be extremely clear in the images that it produces, and you won’t have to deal with any color fringing.

The Regal M2 80ED also comes with long eye relief, and you will feel pretty comfortable using it with your eyeglasses on. As it is a spotting scope so it can focus as close as 21.3 feet away.

However, it does come with a slightly wider field of view for better situational awareness. So it becomes handier for hunters to locate their game and identify everything in the surrounding area.

Celestron Regal M2 100ED

The Celestron Regal M2 100ED spotting scope is an excellent choice for astronomers and stargazers because this scope allows you to see in extremely low light conditions pretty well. The scope comes with an extremely powerful ED glass lens with a large diameter.

The Celestron Regal Mm2 100ED can conveniently acquire more light from the surroundings and provide you with clear images and sharper results.

The Regal M2 100ED spotting scope comes with a long eye relief of 20mm, and you can conveniently use it with your eyeglasses on. As it’s a high-powered spotting scope for distant imaging, its close focus range is 26.2 feet, which is pretty weak.

When used as a Digiscoping, you’ll love the fact the images will stay sharp even at the maximum zoom.

Celestron Warranty

Celestron provides a 2-year warranty on all its spotting scopes, including the Regal M2, along with other products.

This warranty includes any issues with the quality of the materials and craftsmanship but doesn’t include loss, theft or cosmetic damage, or alteration, either intentional or unintentional, affecting the performance of the ocular device.

There is nothing special or extraordinary about this warranty, but you can consider it good enough for the price. Still, brands like Vortex and Leupold are outshining in this department if you compare them with Celestron.

The Celestron Regal M2 spotting scope is a premium-quality flagship ocular device, so there are not many issues.

However, you have to purchase a tripod mount right away because it’s a pretty heavy device, and you can’t use it on the go. Moreover, there is no strength eyepiece available for the Regal M2 spotting scope, and it’s only available in 45-degrees angled eyepiece.

Additionally, I really think Celestron needs to work on their warranty because it’s a pretty competitive market, and things are not just about the features of the ocular device. A brand like Celestron’s quality can gain a serious competitive edge over its competitors with after-sale services.

What’s in the box?

  • Celestron Regal M2 spotting scope
  • Zoom eyepiece
  • Eyepiece cover (thread-on)
  • Protective case (stay-on)
  • T-mount adapter ring
  • 2-year warranty

This package includes pretty much everything that you will need to get out there and start using your scope. But it doesn’t include everything as it doesn’t come with a tripod.

You will have to buy one separately right off the bat because you can’t use the scope without one because of its weight. I really think Celestron should have included the tripod as a part of the package.

Celestron Regal M2 Spotting Scope user reviews

This spotting scope comes with an average user rating of 5 stars which is perfect.

Most people talked about how great the optics work in low light conditions and how clear the images are, due to the ED glass and XLT coatings.

But some people have also complained that the scope is pretty heavy, and you won’t get any straight eyepiece design here.

I had a chance to critically check two of these against a Nikon ED 50mm and Celestron M2 80mm. Optics of 65mm is nearly equal to Nikon and better than M2 80mm. Focus is precise, snaps into focus and mount is solid enough to resist shake on a good tripod. I found I could read 1″ print on a sign at 150 yards in dim light. Could not notice any brighter image on 80 mm, and softer focus and less rigid mount on that scope make the 65mm my choice.

Pros: Sharp, clear optics, precise focus, solid mount, moderate weight.
Cons: Weight balances towards eyepiece, eyepiece cover hard to thread
